چکیده

The luminosities and periods of obscured AGB stars in the LMC are discussed using a combination of ISO and ground-based infrared photometry. The bolometric luminosities of these stars fall close to an extrapolation of the period-luminosity relation derived for oxygen-rich Mira variables, with both oxygenand carbon-rich stars falling close to the same relation. It has been known for many years that there are, in the Magellanic Clouds, significant numbers of large amplitude variables which have considerably higher luminosities than the period-luminosity relation would predict. Many of these can be shown to be undergoing hot bottom burning. It is speculated that all large amplitude AGB stars with luminosities significantly higher than indicated by the period-luminosity relation are undergoing

Monitoring of dust-enshrouded AGB stars in the LMC

Twelve IRAS sources in the LMC with colours similar to those expected for dust-enshrounded AGB stars have been monitored in the infrared for 1880 days. The objects come from the list of Reid (1991). Nine of these objects are large amplitude variables with periods in the range 530 to 1295 days. The variability confirms their status as dust-enshrouded AGB stars. Combined with the results of Wood ...

Mass-loss rates and luminosity functions of dust-enshrouded AGB stars and red supergiants in the LMC

A radiative transfer code is used to model the spectral energy distributions of 57 mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for which ISO spectroscopic and photometric data are available. As a result we derive mass-loss rates and bolometric luminosities. A gap in the luminosity distribution around Mbol = −7.5 mag separates AG...

Gas and dust budget of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using mid-infrared spectra, together with photometric data from the SAGE programme, we establish a colour selection of carbon-rich AGB stars with intermediate and high mass-loss rates. We also established mass-loss rate ...

The global gas and dust budget of the Large Magellanic Cloud: AGB stars and supernovae, and the impact on the ISM evolution

We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully...

Evolution of the dust mass loss with luminosity along the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Evolution of the dust mass loss with luminosity along the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc Abstract. The present paper investigates the properties of the dust mass loss in stars populating the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, by combining ISOCAM and DENIS data. Raster maps of 5 fields covering areas ranging from 4 × 4 to 15 × 15 arcmin 2 at diff...
